I am Wilco Otte (23), the Youth Delegate for the Netherlands at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. I will fly to New York several times this year to lobby and discuss matters with UN leaders and humanitarian organisations. Furthermore, I think of activities to make Dutch youngsters aware of the goals of the UN, and I am thereby assisted by my Work Group. In this way I can also find out what the Dutch youth finds important, and make them heard at the UN in New York.
My points of focus are mainly:
- stimulating the communication between youngsters in Dutch society, to battle prejudice and to stimulate equality between people
- making young people aware of the importance of the work and the goals of the United Nations
- drawing focus to the battle against Child Labour
However, these points are subject to what the Dutch youth wants him to focus on.
I was born and raised in Hilversum, the Netherlands and study Human Geography and Urban Planning at Utrecht University. I also like to engage in other activities, such as work for my student union (V.U.G.S.) and the Foundation for International Volunteer Projects in the Netherlands (SIW). During these activities I have obtained various skills, such as discussing certain subjects, learning to bring your statements across, listening to others and planning your goals. Therefore I always hope to book results, no matter how big or small. I would like to further these skills...yet now focusing on young people.
During summer holidays I usually attempt to go abroad, to do a volunteer project or just to see some more of the world. I did voluntary work on an ecological farm in Equador, for example. I believe that the wealth that this world offers should be accessible to everyone. I feel that because I have seen many countries (in Africa, Asia and Latin America), and because I have obtained the above mentioned skills, I will do a good job representing the Dutch youth with the right people in the United Nations. All this with the goal of giving young people a voice!
